Charles Drozd, Jr
Charles (Chuck) Van Buren Drozd, Jr., 70, of Troy, NY died November 8 peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by his family.
Born April 30, 1951, Chuck graduated from Troy High School in 1969, then received his BA in Marketing Management from Siena College in 1973. Chuck worked for the Price Chopper Corp., the NYS Racing and Wagering Board; he served as Rensselaer County Deputy Auditor and City of Troy Auditor. He most recently was employed by Capital Region BOCES as a permanent teaching assistant at Cohoes High School, where he was a loyal, committed advocate of the school, teachers, and students.
Chuck was an avid sports fan, closely following North Carolina Tar Heels college basketball games, as well as the New York Yankees and thoroughbred and harness racing. His passion for baseball led him to teach softball skills to his daughter from toddler to teenager, eventually coaching her in Brunswick Softball. He served as a manager and coach for the Brunswick Babe Ruth Baseball League for several years, where he was highly respected by his colleagues, parents, and players. He spent countless hours coaching his brothers as they grew to love the sport, too. More recently, Chuck became an umpire for Little League baseball, and softball, and a referee for volleyball in youth and high school teams. He was admired for his fairness, professionalism, and compassion for players.
Pre-deceased by his parents, Charles Van Buren, Sr., and Annie Jean Smith (Alfred E., stepfather), Chuck was the loving husband of Marian Mahar Drozd, cherished father of Elizabeth Drozd Christiansen and son-in-law Zach, and beloved Papa of granddaughters Mollie and Mayzie and furry companion Lillie. He is also survived by sisters Sheila J. Drozd (Sharon L. Furtado), Sherry A. Jones, Lisa Monahan (Patrick), Linda Boyce (Raymond), and brothers James Smith (Theresa) and David Smith (Jennifer), as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by friends, family, and those in the school and youth sports communities.
The family extends their deep gratitude to Dr. S. Pahwa and the nurses and staff of the 2nd and 4th floors at Samaritan Hospital for all their care and support.
Family and friends are invited and may call from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday November 12, 2021 at the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh. Marion and Lizzie we are very sorry to hear of your husbands' and fathers' passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers and wishing you healing. We have a lot of very good memories of you, Chuck, and Lizzie over the years and only regret that the passing years while raising children kept us apart. You have a lot of good memories and lots of love to draw from.....embrace that now. We are not in NY at the moment so we will not be in attendance but know that we care and will reach out to you sometime in the near future.
