She was the daughter of the late Edward and Jessie Wager Spain. Ellen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis S. Gagliardi in 1994.
Ellen was an employee of the New York Telephone Company for a number of years prior to becoming a homemaker. Upon her return to the business world, she worked for the Albany City Board of Education. After her retirement from the Board of Education, she again became a homemaker so she could dedicate her time to spend with her grandchildren.
She was the devoted mother of Karen (Gerald) O'Brien of Rotterdam, Francis (Penny) Gagliardi of Mechanicville, Mark Gagliardi of Mechanicville and Ellen (Alan) Saunders of Wynantskill. She was the Cherished grandmother of Amandabeth Salway, Christine O'Brien and Stephanie O'Brien; Danielle Gagliardi, Ariel Gagliardi, Gabriella (aka Abby) Gagliardi, and Hannah Gagliardi; Daira Gagliardi and Angelica Gagliardi; Victoria Pallozzi (affectionately known to Ellen as "Gloria") and Anthony Pallozzi, along with six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers James (Barbara) Spain, Thomas (Maryann) Spain, her sisters Catherine Barlow and Diane Keyes and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Ellen was predeceased by her two brothers Edward Thomas Spain and William James Spain and her sister Carolyn Smith.
Ellen was a fervent animal lover and in accordance with her wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Susquehanna Animal Shelter, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, New York 13326 or Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, New York 12204.
