Joseph L. Barbeito, 65, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Albany Medical Center with his wife and two sons by his side.
Joseph (Joe) was born in Brooklyn in 1956 to Barbara and Leon Barbeito. As a child the family moved to Sayreville, New Jersey where he attended school. He later graduated from Rutgers University receiving his BS in Natural Resource Management. After receiving his degree, he worked for the State of Pennsylvania as a forester. He then fulfilled a dream to work and live in Alaska for the US Forest Service. He was in charge of the forest management program (Silviculture) for the Tongass National Forest in Ketchikan, Alaska. During his time in Alaska his great respect and love for the forests and wilderness deepened. He also fought forest fires in California, Oregon and Washington during his time out West. He met his wife of 33 years Debra Fowler (DJ) in Oregon and after several years in Alaska they moved back East to be near family. He became employed by NYS DEC as a forest appraiser and finished his career as a mined land reclamation specialist living in Saranac Lake at the end of his life. He retired from NYS DEC in 2020 after 28 years of service.
Joe loved fishing, spending time in the woods, Bruce Springsteen, playing guitar and harmonica and spending time with his family. He also was an avid baseball fan. He played during school and later helped coach his sons’ Little League teams. He was a kind and loving man who enjoyed meaningful conversations and was devoted to his two sons, his grandchildren and wife.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Barbara and Leon Barbeito.
