George Albee Schindler, 82, husband of 40 years of Lorraine Arekian Schindler passed away peacefully Thursday, January 1, 2015, surrounded by those he loved.
Born in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late Miriam Albee Clausen and the late Charles Schindler.
George graduated from Albany Academy, studied at Cornell University, graduated from Siena College, earned his Juris Doctorate from Albany Law School, class of 1958, and was thereafter admitted to the New York State Bar. He joined in partnership with his mother, in her private law practice at Clausen & Schindler, was an assistant Attorney General of the State of New York where he tried many cases in NY's North Country. He resumed his private practice and worked for New York State Bill Drafting Commission, where he was formerly Secretary of the Commission. While there he wrote legislation that created thousands of laws including many that affected addiction, including the formation of the Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, the well -known Lemon Law, and revised the Pari-mutual Revenue Law. He was President of Vesta Community Housing Board, a Board of Director of Peter G. Young Housing Industries and Treatment Program, a founding member of the Citizens Council of Alcoholism, and dedicated himself to helping others as he himself had been helped. After retiring from NYS he maintained his private practice, as well as working for the City of Troy's Corporation Counsel and was financial manager and counsel to Lori Schindler Realty Company. George was a devoted husband, father and friend who was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Survivors in addition to his loving wife, Lorraine, include his children, Susan Schindler of Brooklyn, Jane Schindler of Alexandria, Va., James McClenaghan of Brunswick, Kristin McClenaghan of Brunswick, his grandchildren, Justin McClenaghan, Alyssa McClenaghan and Nora McClenaghan. George was pre-deceased by his son, Douglas H. Schindler.
Family and friends are invited Wednesday, January 7, 2014 from 4 to 6 pm with a memorial service to follow at 6:00 pm at The Chapel and Cultural Center, 2125 Burdett Avenue, Troy, NY 12180. Burial will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to Peter G. Young Foundation, 428 Duane Avenue, Schenectady, NY 12304 in memory of George.
