Helen Conway Purcell a lifelong resident of Troy, 82, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014 at her home.
Born in Troy, she was the daughter to the late John J. Conway and Florence M. Powell Conway, and loving wife to Thomas J. Purcell of Troy.
Raised and educated in Troy, she was a graduate of Catholic Central High School, class of 1948 and Spencer Business College; she also attended Russell Sage College. Helen worked for the Troy Record Newspaper for almost 45 years, retiring in 1994. Helen joined The Record as secretary to the Circulation manager. In 1973, she became secretary to the publisher, at that time Bill Rush. She continued in that position until her retirement working with Frank Hoenig, Bob Wahl, Alan Leslie, Terry Brennan and Steve Buckley. Her gifts of patience, compassion, humor and dedication and the memory of her vitality and generosity of spirit will remain with us well into the future.
Helen enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Alaska and Maine with her husband and loved walking along the marginal way. She loved all animals especially her beloved cat "Blackie".
Survivors in addition to her husband, Tom, include her brother John J. Conway of Troy, three sisters Florence M. Conway of Troy, Mary C. Warner (Earl) of Poughquag, NY and their children Glenn (Dee), John and Patrick, Shirley A. Conway of Troy, sister in law, Ann Seracino Conway of Troy, her daughter Deborah (Jeff); and sister in law Mary T. Dufresne of Waterford and her children Robert, Gary and Bryan; her brother in law William T. Purcell (Dorothy) of Endwell, NY; and their children Mary (Lee), Lynn Ann, Kathie, Patricia, JoAnn and John (Chris) and several great nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen was predeceased by her sister, Catherine A. Conway, her brother Daniel J. Conway and dear friends Dolores and David Heer.
Funeral services will be 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014 from the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh and at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Third Street, Troy, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Troy.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen's memory may be made to St. Joseph's Church, 416 Third Street, Troy, NY 12180 or a Charity of one's choice.
