James L. Nelligan, 74, of Troy, New York, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, February 28, 2017.
Born in Troy on April 2, 1942, he was a son of the late Timothy H. and Anne (nee: Fox) Nelligan.
He was raised and educated in Troy and a graduate of St. Francis deSales Grammer School and Troy High School, both in Troy. He later attended Hudson Valley Community College receiving a degree in Criminal Justice. James proudly served in the United States Army.
James was a police officer for the City of Troy for many years, retiring as a sergeant in 1986. He was also a member of the PBA in Troy for many years.
In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his brother, Timothy J. Nelligan in 2014.
Survivors include his children, James Nelligan of Palatine Bridge, Cathy Samples of Troy; his sister, Margaret Conway of Garden City, two brothers, Roger (Barbara) Nelligan of Lake Luzerne and John (Sheryl) Nelligan of Castleton; his grandchildren, Colin, Jamie and Elizabeth Nelligan; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. at McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, 8 109th St., Troy, NY.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy.
