Marilyn S. Mackey, 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at Van Rensselaer Manor in Troy.
Born in Troy, New York, she was the daughter of the late Dwight G. Smith and Viola H. Wolfe Smith and beloved wife of the late Patrick D. Mackey. They were married for 60 years.
Marilyn was a proud member of the Lansingburgh High School Class of 1948. She received a B.S. in Business Education from Albany State Teacher’s College in 1952.
Together with Principal Edward Johnson and Lorraine Kardas, Marilyn welcomed students to Rensselaer Park Elementary School in Lansingburgh when it opened in 1975. During her tenure in the school office as a stenographer, she worked for three different school principals, until her retirement in 1995.
In addition to Rensselaer Park, Marilyn worked for Behr-Manning (Norton Company), the NYS Education Department, the Salvation Army and several Troy attorneys.
Marilyn was an active member of Trinity Church Lansingburgh and the Women of Trinity. She was an avid reader and enjoyed lunches and reunions with her class mates. She loved visiting her children in the Boston area.
Survivors include her daughter Barbara A. Mackey (Eric Ahlberg) of Norwood, MA; her son James P. Mackey (Sarah Regan) of Medford, MA; a sister-in-law Edith Laviano of Troy; two brother-in-laws William Mackey (Lena) of East Greenbush and Daytona Beach, FL, Louis Caprara of Latham, NY; four nieces, Nancy and Carol Chuhta, Paula Sperry, Susan Mackey; eight nephews, John Chuhta, Irving and Thomas Campbell, Daniel and Paul Laviano, Marc and Gregory Caprara and John Mackey. Besides her husband, Marilyn was predeceased by her sister Dorothy Chuhta (Alexander) and brother Irving Campbell (Janet); two brothers-in-law John J. “Jack” Mackey and Vincent Laviano; sister-in-law Patricia Caprara.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2019, from the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th and Third Ave., Lansingburgh and at 11 a.m. at Trinity Church Lansingburgh, 585 Fourth Ave., Lansingburgh, with Rev. Dr. Desmond Francis officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
