Salvatore "Tory" O. Clemente

Troy-Salvatore (Tory) Orazio Clemente, 92, passed away at his home of 65 years in Troy, NY on September 18, 2022. Born on October 7, 1929, in Troy, Tory was the son of Italian immigrants Orazio and Maria (née Ambrosacchio) Clemente and brother to the late Anthony J. Clemente (Lena) and the late Gay M. Rindone (Philip). Despite losing his father as a toddler, Tory had an energetic determination and unwavering spirit from a young age; he was a Manhattan College graduate, US Army veteran, professional engineer, US patent holder, and co-founder of both Troy Sand & Gravel, Inc. (1957) and Bonded Concrete, Inc. (1964). Tory was the beloved husband of the late Anne Marie (née Corbett) Clemente for over 64 years and is survived by eight sons and two daughters: Matthew, Thomas (Nancy), Andrew, Philip (Mary), Jude (Linda), Luke (Marianne), Carl (Ann), Brendan (Roberta), Jessica Churan (Mark), and Rebecca Hessinger (Raymond). Tory was also “Papa'' to 32 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Tory had a palpable passion for his businesses, from which he never fully retired. In addition to being a resilient businessman, Tory was ever committed to his local community, evidenced by his affiliations with St. Augustine’s Church and Rotary International for over 65 years. He was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening throughout his life. His vegetable garden was the envy of many; he was famous for particularly hot Italian peppers and his ability to cultivate large fig trees, despite brutally cold Northeast winters. Tory’s life-long interest in the issues of the day always made for lively conversation around his long, self-crafted dining table.

Notwithstanding his many commercial successes, Tory placed family, friends, and faith above all else. He never lost his appreciation for the little things in life, whether biking on the beach in Florida, embarking on his daily two-mile treks, frequenting the local Starbucks for a cappuccino, or enjoying his favorite foods, including oatmeal raisin cookies (extra crispy) and Lo Porto’s calamari fra diavolo (extra hot). The profound impact he had on his family and community will not soon be forgotten and he will be dearly missed by all those who were blessed to know him.
