Thomas Joseph Madden “Tom”, age 90, of Brunswick passed away on January 10, 2017 at Evergreen Commons, East Greenbush, after a brief illness, following a decade of declining health. Tom was born in Troy to Charles and Marie Frear Madden and lived in Brunswick for over 63 years.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who was fiercely independent yet always available to assist family and friends. Tom was always good to his word, and after building his castle in Brunswick, finally in the end, almost got his wish to go "out that door feet first"!
Tom is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Kilgallon who he married in February 1975. Tom married Joyce Elizabeth Eagle on June 28, 1947, who predeceased him in August, 1972, and is survived by a son, Mark (Cathy Zlotnick) of Avondale Estates, GA and daughter Joanne (William Ratigan) of Buskirk, NY, a granddaughter Jennifer Madden, P.A. (Dr. Scott Krummey) and twin great grandsons, Samuel Scott and Lewis Matthew of Atlanta, GA and grandson Matthew Madden, Nashville, TN.
Tom is also mourned by his life-long friends, and Banker Ave neighbors.
Tom was born in November 8, 1926 and grew up during the Depression in Troy. At age 17 he left Lansingburgh H.S. and joined the U. S. Marines on October 16, 1944. After boot camp at Camp Lejeune, S.C. he drew sea duty as a USMC gunner aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bunker Hill and later participated in the repatriation of Japan aboard the U.S.S. General Gordan, initially at Hiroshima after the devastation of the first atomic bomb and later Yokahama, Japan as well as serving abroad the U.S.S. General Butler in Shanghai and Tsingtao, China.
After serving his country in the USMC, Tom worked for over 37 years at Bendix Corp in Green Island, first in the laboratory and later as a test driver until his retirement in 1985.
Tom was a good man who was "old school" tough, who loved his family to the end. Tom was hard to forget by whoever might have crossed his path and will without a doubt be missed by all.
There will be no service as was Tom’s request. His family would ask that, if interested in making a donation in Tom’s memory please kindly donate in memory of "Pepper" the family dog at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.
