Latham- James Kalogridis 96, died Thursday, February 25, 2021 in the comfort of his home with his loving family by his side. Born in Kavala, Greece July 7, 1924 the proud son of Brigadier General Michael Kalogridis and Katina Kavounidis Kalogridis.
Jim attended the University of Athens, served in the Greek Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and played an active role in the Greek underground resistance during WW 2 and the Greek civil war against communism. He immigrated to the United States, settling in the capital region, and married the love of his life Mary (Nicholas) Kalogridis on February 10, 1952. They resided in Pompano Beach, Florida from 1987-2005.
Following employment at Williams Press and Callahan's restaurant, Jim owned and managed several local restaurants including: The Athenian in Thatcher Park, Inn Diner, King's Inn, Steak N' Eggs and Sky Harbor. He established Colony Realty and co-owned Colvin Wine and Liquor with his son Stefan Kalogridis.
Jim loved all children and animals, his beloved dogs, and was affectionately known as “Bird.” He loved being outdoors, tending his bird feeders, flower and vegetable gardens, being on the water and fishing. A longtime member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) he was proud of his Greek heritage and United States citizenship. Jim held a deep appreciation for the freedoms and opportunities his country offered him and others. He often offered employment and shelter to those seeking their United States citizenship.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife of 55 years Mary, his siblings Hermioni, Anna, Emanouel, and daughter in-law Janet Kalogridis. He is survived by his sister Despina Cherevas of Nashua, NH. Children: Michael Kalogridis, Tina Kalogridis, Stefan Kalogridis (Nelli) and Elizabeth Kalogridis Frick (Rich Strath). Papou (Grandfather) to: Evan Dimitriadis, Maria Dimitriadis Byron (Richard), Alex Domberg (Miriam), Alayna Kalogridis (Chris Jones), Preston and Lydia Frick, and Nicholas Kalogridis. Great grandchildren: Ariana Byron and Mikael Domberg, and many nieces and nephews. Godchildren Elizabeth Thomas and Angel Bauer.
Calling hours are from 10:00am-12:00pm Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Road, Albany, N.Y. 12208. Followed by funeral services officiated by Father Patrick Legato. Burial at Elmwood cemetery, Troy. Due to Covid restrictions face masks and social distancing are required.
